Dairy consumption is also suggested to be less than the USDA's version at 1-2 servings per day or a vitamin D and calcium supplements. Researchers also recommend daily exercise and vitamins.

In my opinion, Harvard's pyramid is substantially healthier than either of the USDA's attempts. It seems more independent and based on better research. If you are considering making improvements to your diet, I suggest you take a look at the Healthy Eating Pyramid.

The reason why I dislike it is because it means absolutely nothing and is only used to deceive buyers into believing the food item is healthy.

You will see a lot of foods labeled as natural or all natural. It sounds good. Many people think this means something similar to organic. In some consumer polls, the term natural or all natural has even garnered more consumer confidence than organic certification. But unlike organic, which requires USDA inspections and certification, the term natural is mostly meaningless marketing. No government agency, certification group, or other independent authority defines the term on packaging or ensures the claim is truthful.

The FDA, which oversees food label claims (and often not so well), has no definition for the use of the term natural or all natural. The government agency has not objected to all natural claims when the food product does not contain added color, artificial flavors, or synthetic substances.

At first glance, this appears to be an okay standard. But upon further reflection, the FDA leaves out trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, genetically-modified organisms and more. This is unacceptable. It is hard to put much stock in these claims if there is no government oversight and no consequences for misleading claims.

Without a proper definition, food companies have been allowed to define the claim themselves and this has led to some ambiguity at best and unethical behavior at worst. How many scandals have the food and chemical additive industries been involved in over the past few decades? The list is too long to count, making it obvious to most (but seemingly not the FDA), that these companies should not be left to their own devices.

While the government doesn't appear to have gotten all that involved in overseeing the all natural claim, based on the fact that they haven't even defined it for food manufacturers, it hasn't stopped consumers from holding food producers and retailers accountable. Numerous lawsuits have been brought and won against some of the biggest companies in both groups. I expect this to continue. Americans are finally waking up to the fact that most companies put profit ahead of our health concerns.

In terms of benefits, local farms typically spend less time in transit, meaning the food is fresher and has more nutrients. Because of this, local foods have higher amounts of vitamins and minerals while lasting longer. Unfortunately, unadulterated produce items can lose nutrient content rather fast. If produce is frozen or canned quickly after harvest, they can often be higher in nutrient value than products in the produce aisle that have traveled a great distance, despite a general assumption that these foods carry greater freshness.

You also support your neighbors and local economy while helping to reduce transportation costs and the fossil fuel impact on the environment.
